Still No Respect for Gays and ‘Third Gender’ People as Equal Citizens in Nepal

Like many marginalized and voiceless Nepali people, homosexuals and third genders fought against autocracy and took to the streets for democracy in 2006. Now democracy has prevailed in Nepal. But many gay men and women still remain without any rights—and many ‘third genders’ are either compelled to carry a wrong citizenship ID or are denied any recognition as citizens of Nepal at all.

Gay Social Networking Site Plans Expansion Into China

Gaydar, one of the world’s largest ‘social networking’ sites serving gay men and women throughout the world, is set to expand into China. The company will be launching a Chinese language version to serve the greater China region—including mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, which, estimates say, has a gay population exceeding 50 million.

Hu Jia jailed for more than three years for speaking out against China’s Aids program
Amnesty International reacted angrily to news this week that a human rights defender has been sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment and one year political rights deprivation in China. Hu Jia, an AIDS activist working in China’s gay community and beyond, was convicted for ‘inciting subversion of state power’ by the Beijing Municipal No 1 Intermediate People’s Court earlier this week.

Still No Hearing Date for Sacked Soldiers Accused of Being Lesbians
The Nepal Army Legal Department failed to go ahead with a hearing last week in the case of two women who were thrown out of the army after allegations that they were involved in an 'indecent intimate relationship'. Both women deny the allegations, and one of them denies being lesbian.

An Indian tribe has given its consent to a lesbian 'marriage' in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, a move that sociologists say is unheard of in India. According A priest belonging to the Kandha tribe led the ceremony between Wetka Polang, 30, and Melka Nilsa, 22, in Koraput district recently.
